Signing a Georgia Speeding Ticket

If you sign your name to a traffic ticket you are not admitting guilt to the violation, you are simply promising to appear in court on the designated court date.

Signature Bond:  Many of our clients ask us about the legal implications of signing a traffic ticket.  Signing a traffic ticket is a signature bond, assuring the law enforcement officer as well as the court that you will pay the fine before your court date or appear in court when you are supposed to.  It is very important to note that signing a citation is not an admission of guilt, but simply a promise that you will show up on your court date.

Court Date:  If you do not appear in court a bench warrant may be issued for your arrest.

Refusal to Sign:  A lot of the time law enforcement officers will write refused to sign on the ticket if you do not sign the ticket.    However, a law enforcement officer has the authority to arrest you and transport you to jail if you refuse to sign the traffic ticket.  If you are arrested, you will have to post either a cash or property bond, acknowledging that you will appear in court at a later date.
